Gutenberg Tip #2: Drag & Drop Images Straight to Your Post

Written by Ina Morosanu on in Gutenberg 2 comments

Time is priceless, so here is another Gutenberg tip that will save you some clicks and will make the process of creating a new post much faster and easier.

Instead of adding a new Image Block and upload files via the Media Library, you can simply drag and drop images to your post from any folder on your computer. When dragging the image, a blue horizontal line will appear in the editor to make it easier to see where it will be placed. After this, the image will be automatically uploaded to your Media Library, while you can continue making adjustments to your post or the image itself. A real time-saver!

  • Thanks for this timesaver. Unfortunately, it’s not working here. I’m on the currently latest version, WP 5.1 but when I d&d an image to the Gutenberg and release when the blue line appears, it asks me if I want to leave the page and when I agree it displays the image in a blank window and not uploading it.
Should this tip already work? What am I making wrong here?

    • Probably there is a plugin or theme conflict with WordPress/Gutenberg.

I tested WP 5.1 with one of our themes, and drag&drop images from desktop works fine.
