Sometimes you just want a beautiful, filterable-looking grid of images — no portfolio posts, no featured images, no single project pages. Since v1.4.32 the Portfolio block can do exactly that: switch its source to Images and build the grid straight from your Media Library.
Setting it up
Add (or edit) a Portfolio block and open the Filtering panel.
Under Portfolio Items Source, choose Images.
Click Add Images and pick photos from the Media Library (or upload). Use Edit Gallery later to add, remove or reorder; the sidebar previews up to 9 images (“Showing 9 of N images”).
In the Layout panel pick Columns, Overlay or Masonry, the column count and gap — and, specific to the Images source, an Aspect Ratio: Original, 1:1, 4:3, 3:4, 3:2, 2:3, 16:9 or 9:16 for perfectly uniform tiles.
Under Fields, decide whether to Show Title (the attachment title) — always or on hover only.
Clicking an image always opens the lightbox, where visitors can browse the whole gallery with arrows; enable Show Lightbox Caption in Other Settings to display titles there too.
Good to know
Titles and captions come from the Media Library — edit the attachment’s Title there.
The Images source is a flat gallery: the category filter bar, the View All button and the Eccentric layout apply to post-based grids only.
Ordering follows the gallery order — drag images in the Edit Gallery view.
You can mix approaches on one page: one block with Images for a photo wall, another with Custom Posts for case studies.
