Videozoom — Video Background on Hover

This article refers to Videozoom

With Video Background on Hover, a short video preview starts playing automatically when a visitor hovers over a post thumbnail on the homepage, archives, and blog listings — the same engaging behavior you know from YouTube and Netflix.

Enabling the feature

The feature is on by default. You can turn it on or off globally in WPZOOM → Theme Options → General → Global Posts Options → Video Background on Hover. When enabled, a Video on Hover tab appears in every post’s Post Options metabox.

Adding a hover video to a post

Edit the post and switch to the Video on Hover tab in the Post Options metabox:

You have two ways to add the clip:

Option A: a self-hosted MP4 clip

  1. Select MP4 as the video source.
  2. Click Upload Video to pick a clip from the Media Library, or paste a direct URL into the MP4 Video URL field.
  3. Update the post.

We recommend a small, low-quality file (2–5 MB) with H.264 encoding, at 720p (1280×720px) or smaller — the clip loads on listing pages, so keep it light. You can cut or resize an MP4 with Ezgif or similar online tools.

Option B: trim a clip from a URL

Don’t have a separate clip? Let Videozoom make one for you:

  1. Select MP4 / YouTube / Vimeo — Trim Video from URL as the video source.
  2. Paste a YouTube, Vimeo, or direct .mp4 link.
  3. Pick the Start Time and Duration, use Preview clip to check it, and optionally enable Remove black bars.
  4. Click Insert Video — WPZOOM’s trimming service processes the clip, saves an optimized MP4, and attaches it to the post.

A few limits of the trimming service: it requires an active theme license, the source video must be public and 30 minutes or shorter, and the trimmed clip can be up to 15 minutes (though a few seconds is ideal for a hover preview).

Tips & requirements

  • Hover previews always play muted — browsers require it for autoplaying video, and it keeps the browsing experience calm.
  • The hover clip is separate from the post’s main video: a 5-second teaser on hover, the full video in the post.
  • Working best with the Video Lightbox: hover to preview, click to watch in a popup.
