Tribune – Building a Block Homepage

This article refers to Tribune

Since 4.3, Tribune’s homepage can be an ordinary page you build in the block editor — the way the Modern and Blocks demos are made. You get a ready-made Home template pattern to start from, then rearrange sections, delete what you don’t need and add anything else, with no page builder plugin.

The classic widget-driven homepage still works exactly as before; this is an alternative, not a replacement. See Setting Up the Homepage for how the two compare.

The quick way: import a demo

WPZOOM → Demo Importer offers two block-based designs:

  • Modern — the card-based Modern style with a block homepage
  • Blocks — the Editorial style with a block homepage

Import either one and the homepage arrives as a page called Homepage, already set as your front page and using the Full Width (No Title) template. Edit it under Pages like any other page.

Building it yourself

  1. Go to Pages → Add New. Tribune adds a Home template pattern to the starter patterns WordPress offers for a new page — pick it and the whole homepage layout is inserted:
The Home template starter pattern

If the pattern chooser doesn’t appear, open the block inserter, switch to Patterns, and look for Home template under Featured or search for “starter”.

  1. In the page sidebar, set Template to Full Width (No Title) so the layout runs edge to edge without a page heading above it.

  2. Edit the sections — the pattern uses core blocks such as Latest Posts, Query Loop, Group and Buttons, so you can change the category each section pulls from, the number of posts, or drop a section entirely.

  3. Publish the page, then go to Settings → Reading, choose A static page, and select it as your Homepage.

Once a static page is your front page, the widget-driven homepage sections — the Featured Slider, the Featured Area and Homepage widget areas, and the Recent Posts loop — no longer appear. Everything on the front page now comes from the blocks on that page.

Tribune’s block styles

Tribune registers a few block styles that match its design. Select a block, then choose the style in the Styles panel of the block sidebar:

Block Style What it does
Categories / Tags (post terms) Buttons Shows terms as pill buttons instead of a text list
Latest Posts Thumbnail List A compact list with a small thumbnail beside each title — the Latest News look from the demos
Group Surface A card-style panel with the current style’s surface background, used for the Stay informed box
Button Link Renders the button as a plain underlined text link

They follow the active Color Style, including its dark scheme, so a block homepage built once looks right in every style.

Switching back

To return to the widget-driven homepage, go to Settings → Reading and set Your homepage displays to Your latest posts. Your Homepage page stays in Pages untouched, so you can switch between the two whenever you like.
